STEPPING STONES

“Make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes.”
—Unknown

Imagine you are standing in front of a swiftly running stream and across the stream is your destiny. What would you do if you wanted to cross the stream to get to your destiny but the distance is too wide to jump and there is no bridge? What if there are a few large rocks on the same side of the stream as you are? Would you use the rocks and place them in the stream to enable you to get across? If you really wanted to get to your destiny, most likely you would.

Now, imagine that one of the rocks is your current job, most aspects of which you just happen to hate. Would you let that stop you from using it? Perhaps another of the rocks is the neighborhood you want to move out of because it is very noisy and congested. Would you still be willing use it? Yet another of the rocks is your already time-constrained family life. Would you use it?

A little change of perspective goes a long way. Start looking at the things that seem to be hindrances to your destiny as steppingstones, instead, and you’ll soon start seeing the potential they have to speed up your progress. What if you ask yourself what relevant skills you can learn or contacts you can make while you are employed at your job, and then, as Louise Hay suggests, regularly affirm, “I bless my current job with love and know that it is only a steppingstone on life’s pathway”? Do you now feel a little less frustrated?

Can you look at your neighborhood with new eyes and find something about it that you can turn to your advantage, like its high customer base if you are in consumer sales, or the potential for organizing interesting projects that bring people together and foster the long-forgotten sense of community? Do you now feel a little more open to what is has to offer you?

How about redirecting the scattered energy of your family into the power of a focused, consolidated unit and, as a result, having everyone reap the benefits of loving, mutual support? Do you now feel a little more successful?

Getting to your life goals requires similar perspective adjusting while you are in your present circumstances. As you think about your goals, take a few minutes to answer the following questions:

What circumstances in your life can you now see as possible steppingstones?

In what way can you use these steppingstones to help you get to your goals?

Finally, how will it change each area of your life if you live from a different perspective?

Accentuate the positive!
