FACING UNSEEN FORCES |
||||||||||
| One day
while I was sitting on the south bank of the Brisbane
River in Queensland, Australia, I noticed several white
seabirds flying nearby. One by one, they flew in and
landed on the river. The thing that caught my attention
as being peculiar was that each one of them, as they came
in for their landing, would turn to face the wind just
before touching down on the water. I had never seen
anything like that in my years of watching birds land on
the bodies of water in and around California where I
lived, and it made me wonder: Was it something
aerodynamic? Was it safer? Was it just easier? I never found out the answer, but I began to relate the approach to my own life and realized that sometimes, probably more often than not, it takes facing powerful forces, forces that can feel overwhelming and scary, in order to accomplish your goals and not just be swept away. Pursuing your life goals requires similar daring and fortitude. As you think about your goals, take a few minutes to answer the following questions: Are you being blown around by the opinions or wants of others? In other words, are you trying to please others at the expense of exploring your own dreams? What have you perceived as powerful opposition to your undertaking your goals that you can, in reality, turn toward and use to your benefit? For example, if your family has always been critical, can you now use that to motivate yourself to go find an outside support network of mentors and peers? If you've thought that you're too old to start something new, can you now look at the value of your life experience and wisdom as giving you an edge? What would you try if you knew the whole Universe was supporting you? Are you willing to be thought foolish by those who don't share your vision and do what you want anyway? Finally, how will it change your life if you risk facing resistance and go for your dreams? Start soaring! |
