BEWARE ROAD HAZARDS

"For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin-real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."
-Fr. Alfred D'Souza

The other day, my friend and I were finishing up a walk along a newly-asphalted path in a nearby nature preserve, chatting away, when I instinctively threw my arm up to stop her from moving forward and onto a diamondback rattle snake that was crossing our path. Unnerved by our close encounter and still clutching each other, we waited for our scaly obstacle to crawl off into the bushes, and then we scurried past. We laughed nervously as we hurried out of the park, half-seriously vowing not to return for future walks without an adequate supply of pepper spray and antivenom, and then we tried to calm down from the adrenaline racing through our veins. As the day went on, I listened to my friend recounting the story of our near run-in to the people we came across, and I noticed that each time the story was told, you guessed it-the snake got bigger!

Why do we humans do that with our fears? We do it because sometimes they're real. Most times, however, they're not. Still, we focus on them and focus on them until we make them into those living, breathing monsters hiding in our closets, just waiting for us to make a move so they can jump out and eat us alive. We shiver under the covers of our average lives, like little children laying motionless in our beds in the dark, never to go out and explore our world again. Before you can move forward, you first have to let go of what's keeping you stuck-real or unreal.

Attempting your life goals requires an awakening to, and an acceptance of, what has you stuck at any point along your path if you're going to get past it and keep moving on freely. As you think about your goals, take a few minutes to answer the following questions:

Are you seeing your temporary obstacles as permanent?

Are you fighting the reality of what is and judging things as either good or bad?

What comfort are you getting out of letting your obstacles keep you in a state of inaction?

What do you think you need to have or be or do to get beyond your obstacles and take consistent action, for as long as it takes, to get where you want to go?

Are you willing simply to leave the past (your obstacles) behind so you can have a future?

Finally, how will it change your life if you let your obstacles become doorways to opportunity?

Get going!

"Most success springs from an obstacle or failure. I became a cartoonist largely because I failed in my goal of becoming a successful executive."
-Scott Adams, of "Dilbert" fame
