WAGONS HO!

"Everyone who got where he is has had to begin where he was."
-Robert Louis Stevenson

In order to get where you want to go, you first have to know where you are. When I was 19, my best friend and I planned a cross-country car trip for a summer getaway. The first thing we did was to go to AAA to get a map and directions. Of course, the clerk helping us first asked us where we would be starting our trip, so he could accurately and efficiently help us to get where we wanted to go. I remember the excitement I felt as he traced our route on the map with a bright yellow marker, starting with a circle around Los Angeles, California and ending with an "X" to mark the spot in Upstate New York. Next, he asked us how often we wanted to stop and where we wanted to stay along the way so he could further assist us by making some reservations. We wanted to get there quickly, so we made only a couple campground reservations and left the other days open so we would be free to explore and take advantage of our options. We departed the AAA office and, subsequently, California prepared with a plan specifically suited to our needs.

Creating your life goals requires similar information gathering and planning. As you think about your goals, take a few minutes to answer the following questions:

Where in your life are you starting your journey to your destiny?

Where do you want to go?

Why do you want to go there? In other words, is it your destination or someone else's?

When do you want to start?

How much time will you need or do you want to take to get there?

What assets do you already have that you can take with you and use?

What resources will you need to start your journey, to get you all the way to your destination, and to sustain yourself when you arrive at your destination? Finally, how will it change your life to go there? Bon voyage!

"If we do not know what port we're steering for, no wind is favorable."
-Seneca
